Cali D. Kurlan (b. New York) is currently living and working in New York City. She earned her BFA in Studio Art from NYU and her MFA in Fine Arts with Departmental Honors at Parsons School of Design.
At the 2018 Pingyao International Photography Festival, Kurlan exhibited numerous photographic works in a curated exhibition, “The Diverse Narratives of Contemporary Photography”, and enacted her most recent performance lecture, “⾛的越多，看得越遠 (via FaceTime)”. Recently, Cali D. Kurlan participated as a photographer and theorist at the 2017 Lishui Photography Festival, Lishui, China. Amongst esteemed colleagues, Kurlan spoke as a part of the 2nd international Photography Seminar on the theme: Images in the Era of Hypermedia.
Kurlan also organized, curated, and participated in a storefront exhibition, Glass Fence, at her space #33w17, East Chelsea, NYC. #33w17 utilizes unoccupied Storefront real estate as an interactive art space, dedicated to hosting ongoing projects, interactive performance art, and curated solo exhibitions focusing on emerging artists and musicians.
She has performed variations of her on going performance art series, 1 Artist in 3 Acts at locations such as the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT and Westbeth Gallery, NYC.
Kurlan has participated in numerous group exhibitions such as the Katonah Museum of Arts, New York and Currency Exchange at the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin, Germany (2013). She has also publicly displayed her work, www.chairsinstallation.com, in her self-run storefront #33w17 in East Chelsea,New York, NY (2016). She is a recent recipient of the Parsons Graduate Student Travel Fund (2015), as well as the Bluewolf Art Scholarship (2016), and a Picture Berlin (2016) Artist in Residence.
